The Pre-sales and Technical Retail Specialist will coordinate technical pre-sales activities in the Retail division. He/she will transfer industry, technical and product knowledge to customers via good written, verbal and presentation skills, and in addition, will set up retail equipment and applications for demonstrations, POCs, and customer testing. He/she will assist with all levels of technical account planning and execution and will accompany sales account managers on visits to customers. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced industry professional with strong software and technical skills to join and add value to a dedicated team looking to expand the company’s retail presence in East and Southern Africa.

Pre-Sales and Technical Retail SpecialistResponsibilities
  • Preparing technical responses to sales opportunities, identifying and mapping the needs of the customer to the proposed retail solution.
  • Presenting and differentiating retail product offerings at a technical level from the competition.
  • Supporting the qualification of new opportunities and/or identification of target accounts.
  • Positioning and presenting  products and software offerings to existing and prospective retail customers.
  • Providing technical assistance and guidance during the pre-sales process by identifying customer’s technical, application and business requirements, prior to proposing a solution.
  • Consulting with technical peers about requirements and capabilities, and supporting sales teams, account managers and partners on proposal activities.
  • Deploying hardware demonstrations (including loading and configuring operating systems and software applications), for the purpose of demonstrations, POCs and customer testing.
  • Taking the lead in Request for Information(RFI) or Request for Proposal(RFP) requirements, including working as part of a bid team.
  • Driving Bid Review process for new opportunities, and win/loss analysis.
  • Creating internal hardware/software requests and POC implementation plans and management.
  • Interfacing with the implementation/project team, articulating customer requirements, to ensure a smooth transition from Sale to Delivery.
  • Liaising with local, EMEA and corporate support teams to ensure accurate and timely resolution of business issues that may arise during the pre-sales process.
  • Managing the retail demonstration room and demo product asset register.
Industry Expertise Activities
  • Staying abreast with the evolution of local and global retail technology and application trends, local regulations and market compliance rules, including customer-specific market developments.
  • Collecting, documenting and presenting local market requirements and competitive trends.
  • Identifying and helping to develop new solutions aligned with Retail strategy.
  • Building productive relationships internally and externally, promoting the company and solutions externally to customers and market influencers, and supporting a team environment at work.


  • Suitable technical qualifications (preference for application/software skills), with applicable experience working in an organisation directly involved in the retail market (supplier of hardware and/or software).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a technical or pre-sales role (customer-facing).
  • Experience dealing with direct and indirect sales channel in East and Southern Africa.
  • Experience traveling in Africa and understanding the complexity of retail markets in various countries.
  • Well-developed software and technical aptitude, with a demonstrable understanding of how to support the sales process from a technical perspective.
  • Ability to develop, document and deliver customer documentation, e.g.preparing a response to technical queries, RFI’s, RFP’s or translation of a customer’s requirements to a scope of work.
  • Experience with skills transfer, for example, delivering training (internally) or by providing technical know-how to customers in a classroom environment.
  • Strong presentation, communication, organization and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to execute responsibilities with limited direct instruction from management.
