Job Purpose:
  • The SQL Server DBA will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of critical SQL Server RDBMS systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance of corporate applications.
  • This is a “hands-on” position requiring solid technical skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the SQL Server Databases including the data warehouse, ensuring its operational readiness (security, health and performance), executing data loads, and performing data modeling in support of the developers.
  • The databases and warehouse support the enterprise applications and must be capable of working independently and collaboratively.          
 
Qualifications and experience:
  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology or relevant equivalent experience
  • Certified MCTS, MCITP, and/or MVP or relevant equivalent experience
  • 8 - 10 years MS SQL Server Administration experience required
 
Key Responsibilities:
Database Administration
  • Manage SQL Server databases through product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
  • Install MS SQL Server Versions 2012 or higher, both Standard and Enterprise and components, including SSMS, Profiler, Query Analyzer, SSAS, SSRS, SSIS, etc.
  • Confirm and advise on MS SQL Server requirements, i.e. hardware, OS, network protocols, etc.
  • Install hardware, OS, networking, security, domains, etc., and configure storage, i.e. RAID levels and disk types, on DB servers
  • Apply Service Packs, Cumulative Updates, OS Patches, and Security Updates on DB Servers.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours.
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
  • Configure DB mail, Linked Servers, Management Data Warehouse (MDW), Resource Governor, etc.
  • Perform and schedule the backup and restore of databases using recovery models, backup/restore tools and SQL statements
  • Ensure databases are secure by configuring logins, authentication modes, roles and permissions
  • Maintain databases by ensuring database integrity, performing index and file defragmentation, and history cleanups
  • Independently troubleshoot (analyze, solve, and correct) issues in real time using the Activity and Performance monitors, SQL Profiler and relevant T SQL commands, providing problem resolution end-to-end
  • Recommend and implement High Availability Technologies like Replication, Clustering, Mirroring, Log Shipping, etc.
  • Apply performance tuning through server configuration, database & session options, and relevant T SQL code
  • Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes
  • Provide 24x7 support for critical production systems.
  • Advise on and implement innovative improvements
  • Share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to team members.           
 
Database Development
  • Apply data modelling / database design techniques, i.e. logical and physical modelling, making use of modelling tools, e.g. Visio, Erwin, etc., to ensure development and implementation support integration and performance expectations
  • Create and maintain T SQL code for RDBMS development
  • Create and maintain Common Language Runtime (CLR) objects, i.e. Stored Procedures, Triggers, User defined functions, aggregates and types
  • Create and maintain SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages for ETL development
  • Create and maintain SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) code for cude development
  • Assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
 
Compliance
  • Adhere to all IT policies, follows relevant pre-defined IT processes and produces audit evidence
  • Adhere to Change Management Process and produce required Change Management documentation prior to changes being released into production
  • Assist with the remediation of relevant audit findings as required
  • Assist with the remediation of vulnerabilities identified during scans and penetration tests as required
  • Understand best practice requirements and their impact on the database environment         
 
Documentation
  • Document all database configurations
  • Record reasons behind design changes
  • Document database related plans and projects
 
Skills Required:
Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Experience with backups, restores and recovery models
  • Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
  • Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Flexible, team player, “get-it-done” personality
  • Ability to organize and plan work independently, i.e. time management
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities and teams
  • Understanding of IT processes, e.g. change management, release management, etc.
